Casey J. Lien, MD

I joined Whatcom Family Medicine in 2019. I was born right here in the northwest in Edmonds, Wash. and completed medical school at the University of Washington. I completed my residency at Tufts Family Medicine in Boston before moving back to the northwest, where I worked in Port Angeles before coming up to Bellingham.

I was drawn to family medicine after volunteering in a small mountain town in Ecuador where we would trek for miles to provide treatment to families that had no way to access care. Having knowledge beyond just one specialty allowed me to treat complex problems. After being drawn to family medicine for the breadth of knowledge it requires, it has been the relationships that I have built and strengthened over time with my patients that has been so rewarding.

My broad background helping underserved populations, plus my experience treating addiction and complex mental health issues, makes me uniquely qualified to help patients not just manage chronic conditions but empower them to lead healthy lives not defined by an illness. I also have a special interest in sports medicine. My experience in sports growing up coupled with my experience in medicine has given me a perspective towards physiologic optimization that I love sharing with my patients.

When not working I love spending time with my wife and three children. We enjoy all the northwest has to offer — you’ll find us up in the mountains, in the woods or on the water playing in nature.
